Laurel René arrived in the art world as an adult, discovering the joy of painting when she was well into her career as a physician specializing in allergies and immunology. A native of New York, she received her medical training at Hofstra University, the State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse and Yale University. She moved to Portland with her husband and two children in 1998.
Laurel René was propelled by the desire to paint, and has continued to pursue this passion with determination. Her training began with watercolors, but she now works almost exclusively in oil. Renés subject matter ranges from still life compositions to portraits and abstract studies in shape and color. Her desire the share this new-found enthusiasm for art led her to open Gallerie Rene’ in 2006. With a vision of a unique establishment featuring multi-cultural artwork, she immediately set about assembling a group of local artists and sculptors, along with antiques and African artifacts. The eclectic mix of artwork mirrors Rene’s attraction to color and texture as primary inspirations.
I paint what I see, and my goal is to capture emotion in each piece. My anatomical and biological background draws me into the process of painting that first starts with an interest, then a query, and ultimately study. I try to reflect this in each piece so that what evolves is not random, but purposeful, without appearing stiff or contrived. Working in oil provides me the freedom to layer color and incorporate textural elements that create unexpected, but not quite accidental finishes. My work is a compilation of my life experiences and I seek to continue to evolve in my technique while continuing to capture the joy and delight I see in the world each day.
